For
some strange reason, the moment that the Monkees left Australian shores,
their stellar chart success suddenly ceased. Was it the distinctly un-bubblegum
nature of "Porpoise Song"? Was it the notoriously obtuse publicity
campaign for the accompanying feature film "Head"? Had the Australian
market for Monkees material finally just reached saturation point? Was
it the absence of regular television exposure? Or was it a combination
of the above?
For
whatever reason, this beautiful Goffin-King song, now highly regarded
by most modern day Monkees fans, coupled with the equally exquisite B-side
"As We Go Along", failed to dent the Australian top thirty.
The
austere sleeve, which matched the LP cover in its minimalism, didn't help
matters.
